Eschweiler, a centre of early industrialisation in the coal and steel sectors in the Aachen and Euregio Meuse-Rhine regions, has been the destination of various waves of labour migrants from within Germany and from European and non-European countries since the beginning of the 20th century, and also after the Second World War. These influxes of migrants have shaped life in Eschweiler today, especially in the Eschweiler-Ost neighbourhood and the town centre. In addition, in recent years numerous businesses have been successfully established by migrants. The City of Eschweiler plays an active role in strengthening the sustainability of this ethnic economy and thus of the local economy in the neighbourhood, with the aim of promoting its potential regarding sustainable urban development.
