The SUN project’s urban neighbourhoods, with their industrial era legacies, suffer from a deficit of environmental quality and in particular of green spaces, in comparison with other districts. As the benefits of nature in town require no further demonstration (air quality, temperature control, general well-being, quality of the landscape, and so on),  the SUN project will seek to reinforce the presence of nature in the districts that are involved. As land recycling for the creation of new green spaces is not easy in practice, one possibility will be to green the fringe between the public and the private domain (frontages, blind façades, etc). This exercise will be difficult for the cities to manage on their own, but with the participation of the residents, it will become possible. Each district will nevertheless have to find, through exchanges organised at local and euregional levels, its own greening strategy.

2011-02-11 | Visit to Le Chênelet in Nord pas de Calais

Le Chênelet was originally a social employment and organic farming project. With support from the Interreg IV programme, among others, it has been expanded into an ecological construction company working with local materials. Using this approach it incorporates the four elements of the SUN project.

Each of the places involved in the SUN project has at least prompted similar projects in one form or another. As in Le Chênelet they often link social employment with construction and agricultural services aimed at the most vulnerable target groups in society. More info under or HERE

2009-03-31 | Presentation of the SUN project

Christine Ruelle (LEMA-ULg), accompanied by Dirk Knapen (DuBoLimburg), Dieudonné Lequarré (Eco' Hom) and Christoph Küpper (FHS-Aachen), presented the project SUN at the occasion of the North-European Forum on Sustainable Disctricts which was held on March 31st and April 1st in Dunkerque. That was a unique opportunity to exchange views with many other participants from various regions, implied in other projects of sustainable neighbourhoods.
