Verviers – Hodimont

The Hodimont neighbourhood is directly adjacent to Verviers city centre, from which it is separated by the Vesdre. To the west, the district is limited by the E42 motorway viaduct. Hodimont developed quickly during the 19th century, with the rise of the textile industry, but its decline was just as fast as that of its industry. Hodimont has approximately 4,300 residents, some 34% of whom are immigrants. It suffers from a declining image and significant socio-economic difficulties (the unemployment rate there is 30%). However, Hodimont has major potential: its proximity to the city centre, its multiculturality and its environment all are positive points that can be used to its advantage. As such, the local authorities have identified the district as requiring specific action and will soon be soliciting the regional authorities for important urban renewal work to be carried out there, necessary for the district to enjoy sustainable regeneration.

2011-02-11 | Visit to Le Chênelet in Nord pas de Calais

Le Chênelet was originally a social employment and organic farming project. With support from the Interreg IV programme, among others, it has been expanded into an ecological construction company working with local materials. Using this approach it incorporates the four elements of the SUN project.

Each of the places involved in the SUN project has at least prompted similar projects in one form or another. As in Le Chênelet they often link social employment with construction and agricultural services aimed at the most vulnerable target groups in society. More info under www.chenelet.org or HERE

That was a unique opportunity to exchange views with many other participants from various regions, implied in other projects of sustainable neighbourhoods.
