Eupen – Unterstadt

The Unterstadt (Ville-Basse) neighbourhood is located in the south-eastern part of Eupen, the county town of the German-speaking Community of Belgium. The district has 5,500 residents. It was developed in the 19th century as a show place of the textile industry because of the presence of water from two rivers, the Helle and the Vesdre. After the decline of the textile industry, the cable industry was established there, and is currently one of the Region’s main employers. This district, characterised by a considerable interweaving of industrial and residential units, is currently suffering from traffic congestion, empty housing and commercial units, and a negative image. The presence of the Helle and the Vesdre, the forest surroundings, the Hautes Fagnes/Eifel Nature Reserve, as well as the nearby dam on the Vesdre, all are favourable elements for making the Ville-Basse District a tourist resort, a place with attractive housing, and a sustainable urban district.

At the end of 2009, a survey was conducted among the residents of the district to better identify what they needed in terms of shops nearby.

The results highlighted that the residents wanted to see specific shops open up such as: an artisan bakery, an organic grocer’s, a sandwich bar, etc.

In February, large screens summarising what was missing in the district were put up in the empty shops in order to encourage such business to move in!
